Climate Change Linked to Devastating Nepal-Tibet Glacier Flood

A recent scientific study suggests that human-caused climate change played a significant role in the catastrophic glacier collapse that led to devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet last month. The disaster resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 people.

Researchers identified unusually warm conditions preceding the collapse of a 200,000 square meter glacier. This warming is believed to have destabilized the permafrost and ice, leading to an avalanche of 110 million cubic meters of snow and ice. The resulting flash floods, on an almost unprecedented scale, struck downstream communities without warning.

The findings highlight the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan regions to climate change impacts, underscoring the urgent need for global action to mitigate rising temperatures and their severe consequences.
