Veteran journalist Luis Galeano, who fled Nicaragua due to political persecution and has been seeking asylum in the United States for approximately seven years, has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Galeano, who was stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship by the Ortega Murillo regime for his critical reporting, has continued to operate his online platform, "Café con voz," from the US.
His detention has raised concerns among immigrant advocacy groups, particularly given his pending asylum case and existing work permit. Galeano's wife stated that he was pulled over by ICE agents while working as a Lyft driver. The incident highlights the precarious situation faced by many asylum seekers navigating the US immigration system.
